The skin looks pretty good, if a little sweaty (especially on the faces). Any tips for getting good skin material? So far most humans posted on these forums look like sex dolls or wax sculptures...

Well less realistic is certainly more successful on DA

Thanks didn't know that effect. I wasn't aware that more realism was a bad thing with humans. When I watched Beowulf I was amazed at the work and the effort. I didn't watch the others as they were too cheesy for me.

I think the idea is that if it looks between say 70% and 90% photoreal it looks even more "not quite right". If it's less than 70% realistic (stuff animals, video games, etc) we can ignore the lack of detail/realism because it's more obvious that it is a fake. However when you get close to realistic, but not quite there humans actually think it looks worse than the ones that are more fake... But if you can get above that 90%, like you said in Beowulf, humans LOVE it.
It does make sense. In the "valley" area we can tell it's a fake but it's close enough to real that we focus on the things that are wrong. Before the valley area we have an easier time ignoring it, like in cartoons. And overall it's can look creepy!
As for your image, I think the materials are very close. It looks a little "shiny", like shes sweating or something, but the beads of sweat aren't actually there. Also, the overall effect would be MUCH stronger if she wasn't perfectly symmetrical and staring so blankly straight at the camera with no mouth tension... Adding some life in the face (hard to do, lol) would really pull the whole thing up better!

I hopefully understood the idea.
I made a test too with the LiveDB skin. Looks more like a make up accident. I tried to give it some definition too (in a seperate test) with the bump and spec map but that looked worse.
I also had a face movement model in the original thing, with essentially the same data, but I didn't really like it.
But I see everyone expects then something different at 90%. I would not expect pearls of sweat. And an oily film is also common. I don't think sss is everything

. Maybe with dry skin.
If you have a photorealistic renderer it's well worth discussing how to get the rest percentage
I think the Daz textures are probably well to idealistic. Maybe real world people would be better.
