Will a 980ti work its full potential in a Mac Pro 3,1 2009

Having read many threads on Mac rumours and other sources on the web people seemed to be saying a 9series card (unflashed or flashed) won't work to its full potential on my Mac Pro 3,1 due to the MB support such as the Pcie lane not being fast enough/modern enough to read and work the cards to its full potential.
I have felt sure it's been done by plenty of other octane uses from previous threads I've read. However just a little bit confused from reading people's comment on threads on the web. It's no doubt making me more paranoid and driving me mad as two weather two of my 980s would be worth using in it. Most of the time I use my PC which has a 1070 in it but wanted to also use my Mac Pro for C4d with octane. May be best to just sell my old Mac Pro whatever it's worth and pump that money into my pc.
Thanks
Andrew
