Hum, it seems that if I don't answer your posts on this forum,
nobody answer anymore ... wake-up Maya plugin community !! ;)

@Tharso, as an alternative to the forum we have a MAYA OCTANE USERS Skype group, created by Jolbertoquini

About your post:

1/ The "background image" feature from standalone was never implemented in the Maya plugin.
I guess we Maya users are supposed to always render with alpha and add the background in a compositing software.

2/ There is an attempt in the plugin for a backplate-like feature using the Maya "image plane" feature,
but this is hardly usable as the "image plane" receive light and shadows from the scene.
Though, that might be your best shot for the moment if you need your backplate image to stick to the camera projection.

3/ With V3 another option is to use the "visible environment" feature.
So you have to duplicate you sunSky node and setup this second one like this:

But last time I tested this method with texture projected from camera, strange things were happening.
So this is mostly to use with a spherical projection for the moment I guess.

Calus said everything :)

Personally I use the image plan in a camera ( Viewport->View->ImagePlane )

But as Calus said, the image plane is physically in the scene as well and will emit and catch light. So you can use it to set up your framing/composition or whatever, then remove it after.
But at the moment I didn't find any solution to had Octane parameters on it..
