How do I create a transparent background?

I need to save an image without the background.
I have unchecked the Alpha Channel in the Octane kernel settings and in my Octane Viewport I can see the transparency grid instead of my background, so far so good. However when I click the "port to max framebuffer" so I can save the image file the alpha channel is black and not transparent. How do I retain a transparent alpha for the background?

Hi haknslash,
or PNG.
As HHbomb rightly says, all formats provided with alpha.

I have tried PNG and Tiff. I think the issue is with the plugin and not necessarily the steps. I say this because if I export the 3DS Max file to Standalone Octane I'm able to enable alpha background and the transparent background works but if I try this in 3DS Max I will always have a black background regardless of settings or file type save.
The same thing happens when I try and hide a ground plane but retain shadows by assigning a matte material. In 3Ds Max the ground plane is still visible with shadows but if I export the 3DS Max file to Standalone Octane the ground plane is hidden but the shadows remain as intended.

Hi haknslash,
there is no issue, just a matter in 3dsMax framebuffer preview, but not in OctaneRender viewport.
Saved image has the alpha chanel (not .jpg of course).
