3ds max crash with Render Elements + Scanline [SOLVED]

I am running into an issue that has stopped me from moving forward. I am attempting to render passes with the default Scanline renderer. Why would I want to use Scanline when I have Octane? I don't know, but I just need some simple Z-passes and vector data that has always worked perfectly in the regular 3ds max Scanline mode.
My scenes can be totally empty or just a sphere, however when I open the render settings with Scanline and under the render elements tab, clicking render elements to select what passes I want to save out. This is where i get a hard crash in both 3ds max 2016 and 2017.
Autodesk has directed me here - saying that it is a crash happening due to Octane, but I am mostly just interested in knowing how I can proceed without uninstalling Octane whenever I need scanline passes. Do I need to have multiple 3ds max installs to use regular scanline rendering + render elements.
Thanks for any assistance in advance!
