VDB troubles in 3ds max+octane

Hey guys,
I have octane for both 3ds max and cinema4d. I was able to render some VDB stuff from houdini easily in cinema. I changed absorption color, scattering, density, all that with easy menus.
However, in 3ds max, nothing I have done changes the cloud color/absorption/scattering.
In max, I only see the "medium" category under the Modify tab. Beneath that, I see absorption scale, emission scale, etc. If I apply an absorption texture to my medium, nothing really happens.
I tried to apply a texture into the medium slot and then drag that into my slate material editor or compact material editor. In both cases, it seems to lose some connection. I had success changing density, but other than that I couldn't make much progress.
Am I missing something here, and is this a really dumb question?
I am a more heavy Cinema 4d user so perhaps I'm approaching it with too much of a Cinema4d mindset and too novice of a 3ds max user.
Any directions to previous documentation would help. I have tried googling tutorials on the matter, but 3ds max+vdb+octane seems to have scarce education out there at the moment.
Thank you.
