Render Pass Crashes

Hi all,
I'm having a devil a time with ambient occlusion passes ( and others) causing fatal crashing whenever I select them from the pulldown list.
For example, with a current model I'm rendering, the beauty pass takes up 0.4gb out a possible 7gb (I'm using an 8gb GTX 1070 card).
When I switch to some passes, such as "diffuse direct" it works fine, but when I go to "ambient occlusion" or "Zdepth" it crashes every time.
Im using 3.0.4 - 4.21. The same issues exists with Max 2014 and 2017. I just swapped out and older GTX970 which had the same issue. I was hoping the new card + memory would fix the problem.. but no such luck.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Didn't put this in the bug thread, since I'm not sure it's something I might be missing.
