Clear plastics for product viz

Hi,

So, the thing I'm trying to get at is here:
image005.jpg
If you look on the sides of the products you can see a sort of rib detail. I've got two materials I need to make (which currently look terrible) - one clear plastic and the other a transparent liquid. At the minute the materials I've made don't show the bottle detail. It's looking kinda washed out at the minute. I have IOR at 1.43, fake shadows are on and the opacity is around 0.5. I'm also using pathtracing.

Any suggestions to get to this would be a huge help.

Thanks for reading.

Lee

Try some different HDRIs as the environment.

Even the best materials on the bottles will look flat without something to show in the reflections.

Hi Leesch,

I would not recommend any Opacity to build translucent materials.
Its just a simple alpha operation without IOR that weakens your bumps, reflections and refractions.
Play around with the transmission instead.

Best regards,
Paul

Hey guys, thanks for getting back so quick. I've had a little play around with the things you suggested and I'm getting slight improvements but not quite getting there. If you look through the bottle, on that image, you an see the bottle detail on the inside. The details are being picked on on the outside but looking through you see very little. I've tried it with and without a thickness to the bottle mesh and that doesn't seem to make a difference. Changing the hdri map doesn't seem to be changing the effects either. Material details are:

bottle:
index - 1.46
opacity - 0.8
transmission is at an off white

liquid:
index - 1.33
opacity - 0.6
transmission is a pink colour

It just seems like such a simple thing (and probably is) but I just cant get my head around it
