Renders ok in the live viewer. Renders as grey in the picture viewer. I'm certain that I'm just missing a simple button or something stupid so can someone take me out of my misery please?

I can't find any fog related object or settings on you scene!!!?? Note that it will not work in "Send all data" mode.
