weird problem with lights

Having a weird problem with octane lighting lately. This problem has started on several projects. I actually get a dark "shadow" where I should be getting a highlight instead. It is like the light system is subtracting light from the surface rather than adding it. Any ideas or help ?

these are just standard self emission surfaces, which I use a lot instead of lights. Does that make a difference ? I prefer to light scenes with 'hot' surfaces rather than lights, because I get greater control of everything

Ok I figured it out kind of... it is something to do with have a 'roughness' setting of around 0.1 with a index of refraction set to 1.0

If I increase the index of refraction, it disappears. If I reduce the roughness toward 0.0 or increase greater than 0.1, it also disappears. So it is like I am getting a 'halo' light effect in the material, which is caused by the roughness setting. Set very low I get a glossy effect. Set high I get a diffuse effect. Around 0.1 it all goes crazy and almost 'inverts'.

Hi,

Are these issues with scenes that have been working fine on previous plugin versions? If this is a recently introduced issue, then this is likely a recently introduced issue that will need to be looked into and removed.

@azen:

do you have a lottery or something, on which post you are replying this month?

It has been necessary to focus efforts in areas that would provide the best long-term benefit to our users (e.g. documentation, video tutorials, expanded user-focused testing, etc). More manpower is needed to sustain these efforts, and they are coming through over the next couple of weeks.

It is true that, in the meantime, the volume of forum responses has dropped particularly low as of late. Getting the best expertise, in the needed numbers. We look forward to the users reaping the benefits of this shortly.
