Hey all.

Latest study, Michell Gyrdodec standalone and in a interior scene.

Standalone renders : 3 octane lights ( as planes ) Direct lighting set to diffuse, Diffuse depth 6, 12k samples, render time 34 minutes, all materials originate in Live DB with some very subtle tweaking so thanks Octane community for the great materials! Linear camera response, no post processing or photoshop work.

Interior scene Renders : HDRI Enviroment texture ( purchased from CGSkies the 12k ones ) tweaked gamma and power output, Direct ligthing set to diffuse, diffuse depth 7, Linear response with a second Agfachrome overlay to bring through some yellow touches, Live DB materials: the leather material made me unwrap the leather chair in headus UV to really take advantage of the material. Render time @ 32000 samples : 1hr 42 minutes, this was to remove all grain, the image looked very clean @ 1 hr 15 but i whacked on another 6000 samples to do a super clean up. Very little photoshop work has been applied.

Im still relatively new to rendering and would like to ask you guys if you think there is room for improvement on these images and any techniques you wouldnt mind sharing, i have read 3 books about MentalRay and Vray but they only ever seem to go so far. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to look at my work and thankyou once again Otoy for a superb software!!

System specs : Asus X99 workstation board / Intel Haswell Hex 5960k with H100i cooler / 32 GB corsair dominator platinum / 1200k corsair platinum PSU / 2 x 980 GTX Vanilla / 1x GTX960 Extreme / 3 x Crucial solid state / NZXT phantom 820 Case / Win 7 Ultimate

Hi Lokken!
I like this one! Surely a great model.
I would suggest you to work at least with PT. I don't like DL, I know that is faster, but if you try with PT or PMC you'll see difference about glasses, metals...
Of course I leave this thing to who uses this awesome engine since more time, but this is what I saw till now, during tests I did.
Have a great evening and see you soon, with same renders computed with PT! :)

What is the mood/realism you are trying to simulate? Be aware that you might need to edit materials and lighting if you switch to pt, like shine suggested. But for a dl render they look real nice.

Great adivce bro, thankyou, i did exactley that, the materials only need some subtle tweaking on the specular roughness and diffuse :)

Here is the first result : Pathtracing 32000 samples, time 3hr 10 minutes, diffuse depth 6. What do you think, the glass has come out far better than before, the wine looks like wine now and not ribena!! im chuffed with that improvement alone. Thanks again for your help shine :). Adam

Hey buddy,

I guess im not sure too sure, i was trying to create an air of silence and stillness, thats why i chose a cooler colour for the HDRI map. Do you think its lacking an obvious mood, a bit flat?

Thankyou for your response :)

Hi Adam!
I think you might improve both quality, than render time.
May you attach a sccreenshot about settings you're using with PT?
Just to see. :)
Have a great day!

Agreed!

Secondly, a much stronger light source at the left window would greatly improve the lighting. Use a plane with emitter material (search the forum on this). It will greatly improve your speed. Nail the lighting first, the we can worry about materials later.

Perhaps a "chiaroscuro" type lighting scenario will help you achieve the mood/look you are striving for. Refer to Shine71's latest gallery post. It's awesome. Keep the foreground in partial shadow, but light up the dec/speakers.

See the attached. One of my favourite Dutch Masters. This may be the serenity you are going for?

best,
O
