Hi,
Just to clarify, are you looking to catch shadows? A little more detail, just to get on the same page, would be appreciated.

he wants to make greyscale masks, because colored masked are difficult to handle because some colors are to identicall....
I would like to have greyscale masks (it seems that it is done in c4d plugin) : so you can say I want id material 1, id material 2, id object 1, id layer 3 (for example), and you get greyscale masks for each.
I asked rendermask Creator(
http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/rendermask) to support octane render, and it said "NO"....

Hi Azen
Sorry I did not see your question until now. All I am trying to do is make quick black and white renders of objects to use as selection masks in photoshop. So for example I am rendering a kitchen and I want to grab just the fridge in photoshop and color correct. I can render out a MATERIAL or OBJECT ID, from Octane but two problems. 1) I cannot use that color information directly to make a selection. I have to use the selection tool in photoshop to "grab" a particular color from the mat id. It is messy and inaccurate. Lots of aliasing problems. 2) I work in 32bit a lot and the selection tool doesn't even work in 32bit in photoshop, so I have to convert it to 8bit just to use it.
I wish there was a new option on the passes pull down that said, "SELECTION" and whatever it currently selected in rendered simple white on black. So an instant "selection" matte. There are a lot of tools that do this for Mental Ray and VRAY but none for Octane. I used to use this INCREDIBLE plugin called PSD MANAGER by CEBAS. Have you heard of it. An absolute life saver for vray. But of course it does not work directly with octane.
Here is a typical viewport
This is what I need ( I had to fake this but you get the idea... I have selected the fridge, and put it on render layer 2, and isolated, and then put it in clay mode, and then over exposed it...phew... )

Hi richardyarlett,
the possibility to obtaining single layers id, to use as a mask is useful.
In C4D this option is possible, therefore I hypothesize it may be in 3dsmax in the future.
to obtain layers with individual id you could do like screenshot attached.

Yeah that works, but boy what a slow way to do it. What if you want to do that with 40 objects ? !!
There should be a much faster way to just render a mask for what you have selected in the viewport.

Hi richardyarlett,
Rather by clicking I think it might be more useful as in the screenshot.
I sent the request to developers about this.

A multimatte element pass (rgb pass) has been asked for month maybe years to developper team ...
Still nothing ...
Seems ocatne development team has no idea of how works a production pipeline.
