480 vs. 580?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering how the 580 compares to the 480 for performance, and to the 560/70 for that matter, couldn't find any obvious answers with a search, maybe I just missed it.

Thanks.

Here is a test from anandtech, it is not 100% relevant for octane but ...

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4008/nvid ... gtx-580/16

It is also usefull to compare the GFlops of the cards:

The graphs on that page are a little older (and use older NVIDIA drivers). This page is a little more up-to-date:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4135/nvid ... -market/15

While most of the graphs are the very similar, the OpenCL graph is drastically improved (since NVIDIA tuned their OpenCL drivers).

These new graphs also include the 560 Ti for comparison.

I got rid of my 480 because it crashed my system...HARD. It's the only thing I've ever seen that can crash Win 7.

Once I got the 580, everything was fine. It also has the added benefit of being a little faster, smaller and generates less heat -- making it more viable to have 2 of them in one case. It's all full of win.

well, I was kind of hoping for octane specific information ( sry I didn't specify ), but as I look at charts, etc.., it appears that 560 2GB x2 is about the same as 1 580 and *should* have more rendering power.

Don't know that for sure though unless someone has tested it in Octane and I've not seen that either.

Take a look at the "Compute: Folding@Home (CUDA)" graph on the following webpage:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4135/nvid ... -market/15

It shows that the GTX 560 Ti is rated at 292.8 and the GTX 580 is rated at 379.7 (which is about a 30% difference). So 2x GTX 560 Ti would give a score of about 585.6, which would be about 54% higher than a GTX 580.

The difference between the GTX 460 and the GTX 480 is more significant (218.7 vs 329.1 or about 50%).

Since Octane also uses CUDA, I would think that it would give similar results (since they are both CUDA based), although that assumption might be totally wrong.

If its faster for everything else, then its faster for Octane. The other benefits I mentioned aren't anything to dismiss. From someone who has had both cards, and is telling you which one is better -- you can either take the information, or not.
