Hair > vertex shader to control length

I've tested adding a vertex shader to control hair length (Hair Mat > Length > Texture = Vertex Map). Works for C4D default render, but Octane seems to ignore the map. Putting a noise on the length channel works to control length.
Is there a step I'm missing or is this not functional?
