Octane render viewport lag

I'm not sure whether this is hard coded or if there's an option somewhere. I'm used to working with Octane in LightWave, where I can see updates instantly. Especially handy when I'm working on lighting.

I open the Octane tab and have the Octane renderer to the left, Camera to the right. I start messing with the lighting, and it takes Octane a sec to update. Is there a way to get Octane to constantly update while I'm moving lights or cameras around? I don't mind it being 'low res' while doing so, but it gives a far faster and better workflow to see how things behave on the go.

Okay, turned out to be only with the sunlight direction.

But now that I've added a point light or a spotlight, I need to refresh the scene manually every time I move or adjust the light.


I'm on Modo 10, Octane 2.25 and 2x Titan by the way.

Yes, I agree that not having instant feedback is a limitation, but unfortunately the Modo event system does not issue the "camera changed" call to the plugin until after you release the mouse button when moving the camera - so this is a Modo limitation rather than an Octane plugin issue. Meshes are a little different - and if you turn the Preference->Octane->Use Modo Render Cache ON, then mesh movements are live (if Live Geometry Update is enabled for the Mesh). Spotlights are not supported - so I'm unsure how you have set this up. Point Lights, Area Lights and Photometric Lights are supported - and the mesh created by the Create Octane Emitter button should follow the parent light and move accordingly - UNLESS you have disabled Live Geometry Update on the mesh, or the light is rigged/parented to something else. In the latter case I intend adding support for rigged light updates in a future plugin release.

The octane plugin also has a preference called "update on mouse button release" which is set to default of ON. I always turn this off

Thanks! Let's hope The Foundry figures something out in their API to make a more 'live' experience.

Further to the above - check out the Preferences->Octane->Update on Mouse Button release setting (mouseover the checkbox for details).

Aaah.. Ok! I didn't even think of that. Preferences are a bit scattered. Just gotta get a hang of it. I will check it first thing tonight.

@OlaHaldor I'm also from an Octane for LW background and I know exactly what you mean, the Lightwave-octane interaction is the best I've seen (I've tried modo, 3dsmax, c4d and lightwave) and extremely fast, basically real-time with a decent gfx card and from what I've seen modo-octane simply cannot achieve this. Each package has their pros and cons but I must admit I really miss the interactivity you get with Lightwave.

This will allow more 'interactivity' (not what I'd consider to be fluid though) but at the expense of slower openGL performance especially with high poly scenes where it's really noticeable. I posted a thread on this some time ago you might find helpful.
