Do I need to upgrade plug-in AND standalone?

Do I need to upgrade plug-in version as well as standalone? I've no need for the standalone.
When's the Blender version released?

Yes. All plugins require the standalone.

Thank you, I forgot about that. I don't suppose it's possible to upgrade the plugin until it's released - and when will that happen?
