Feature request: CLIP PLANE CONTROL

Abstrax & team,

It would be great if we could have a control over the clipping plane orientation. The benefit of the clipping plane for archviz is that it retains the correct shadows - this is magic. However right now the clipping plane is perpendicular to the camera viewpoint, giving a skewed cut of the building or object - less magical. If we cut a building using a common section box in the host app, the geometry is correct but we lose shadow integrity...

TWO FEATURE REQUESTS:
1. To have a controllable clipping plane (by axis, degrees, etc)
2. To have more than one clipping plane or or a kind of section box so that we could cut any section of an object and while still retaining the correct shadows.

We have come across this issue many times over the years and your consideration of such a feature would be very much appreciated!

Best,
Seeker
Clipping in the host app (Revit in this case but same for SU and probably others?) gives correct cut but incorrect shadows

I wonder if there is some kind of trick to achieve this using the 'shadow catcher'....probably not but worth investigating...

Hi Guus,
Not sure how but to me Octane's ability to exclude false light in a clipped view seems to be an unexploited feature. I would imagine it's something that Otoy should be able to impliment and it would be very useful for archviz.

The near clipping plane is super useful for ArchVis, especially for interior renders where you need to position the camera 'outside' the target space, but still get all of the correct lighting and shadow effects. However as it is currently implemented it only works well when the camera is oriented parallel to the space. If you could define an offset angle for the clipping plane relative to the camera angle would make this into a killer feature.

Cheers, Dan.
