It would be nice to see in the next version of the function of such "Auto Smooth" in Blender.
I really miss her

Can you explain it a little bit more for non-blender users ?

"Angles on the model that are sharper than the angle specified in the Degr NumBut will not be smoothed. Higher values will produce more smoothed faces, while the lowest setting will look identical to a mesh that has been set completely solid."
With my English, I can not explain.....

So you say that you want a slider inside Octane to define the smooth level ?
Like if the slider is at 0 = 0° angle smooth and slider at 45 = 45° angle smooth ?

So basically something like smoothing groups ala 3DSMax? Have you tried importing a mesh that has some auto smoothing into Octane(using .OBJ)? Does Collada/FBX support smoothing groups? If they do we could just setup the smoothing groups in our DCC apps instead of adding this feature into Octane.
edit: you can get hard surface and smooth surface just by turning the "smooth" option on/off per material in Octane?

Yes, in Blender threshold smoothing can be changed within 1-80 degrees

Maybe a smooth node that you can insert between the material and the mesh node could do that ?
That would allow smoothing-per-material
Or a global slider, or exporting correct smooth objects

Hey,
I do see us adding options to control these, but it's currently mainly a modeling issue that you can deal with in your 3d modeling app.
It would be handy to have it in octane yes, and i'll definately put it on the wishlist,
but i'm afraid this will take a while to be added as there are quite a bit of other priorities that we need to focus on now,
and users can apply smoothing in the 3d modeling app.
octane does import smoothgroups from OBJ files,
although it does'nt import them per smoothgroup (octane does'nt have a concept of smoothgroups currently),
but it handles them per material.

I tried to export the objects with Auto Smooth. But it does not work in Octane.
Here's a picture of Blender c using Auto Smooth, without assigning smoothing groups

yeah, this is because octane reads the smooth or not per material currently...
it does not create different materials per smoothgroup.
