Out of Core Ram - what is your take on this?

Looking at discussions regarding GTX 1080 and that it has a higher core clock than Titan X but lower Vram (x has 12, 1080 will have 8). So the thought enters my mind, couldn't this 4GB difference maybe be offset by using 4GB Out of Core Ram?
Is that how it works, or is there more to it than that...
Does Out of Core Ram go 1-to-1 with Vram?

Thanks for thoughts or for sharing your experiences..

Out of core is only for textures.. so if you have butt-loads of polys, you are out of luck. ;)

Thanks Frank!
Does a higher level of 'displacement' up polys? Or is displacement a mod of texture?

Hmmm.. good question. My guess is displacement adds geo in engine. Easy to test I guess, but I am done for the day. Fellas?

Yes, when Out-of-core is enabled, every image currently used in the scene is loaded in system RAM instead of VRAM. This is true also for any displacement texture and even HDRI used.
You loose a bit of rendering power (10~20% max) but you should always be able to finish the job, or to have much more space for geometry ;)

Hi Beppe!
If I have a Titan X w/12gb Vram and then a Titan Z with 6gb Vram, I am capped at 6gb Vram.
If I turn on a 6gb Out of Core Dram, would I be running at 12gb, where the full Vram of the Titan X is uncapped?
Or would I need to run a 12gb Out of Core Dram to accomplish this?
Just wondering how this would play out. Thanks!

Hi Notiusweb,
unfortunately, the Out-of-core feature is per machine, not per GPU.
in this scenario, my advice is to move the Titan Z in another box and use them as net render slave with 6GB of Out of core option active. In this way you will use all the VRAM space of the Titan X ;)
