New user here.

I just noticed using a blurry HDR instead of sun/sky greatly reduces fireflies. Then I remembered about "Smart IBL", a nice little soft that can produce three versions from the same HDR: One for background, one for reflections and one for illumination:

But I haven't found a way to load different images for background, reflection and illumination in Octane. :?:

At this point, Octane does not support SIBL. You can only load one HDRI.

when I load a .hdr file as the texture for the texture environment it only comes in as grayscale (like an alpha image) - how do I get colour to come in - I've tried both 'image' and 'float image'

it should be loaded as "image", and it works fine at my end. Not quite sure why it would show b&w, try opening it in you photoretouching app see if "colors are there".
