Interesting Try on PCIe x16 x8 Slots

I have a new built PC. Using the Asrock X99 WS-E with I7 5960x
I have 1 x GTX Titan and 1X GTX 980ti
The Asrock Board has 7 PCIe Slots.

My Plan from the Beginning was to put 3 6GB Cards on it. I am Using am Corsair 750D Airflow Edition
Further i wanted to plug the Cards as Follows:

PCIe 7: Card
PCIe 6: (overlayed / blocked by card on PCI7)
PCIe 5: free/spare (Space for Airflow)
PCIe 4: Card
PCIe 3: (overlayed / blocked by card on PCI4)
PCIe 2: free/spare (Space for Airflow)
PCIe 1: Card

Underneath PCIe 1 is enough Space to the PSU so that there is a cool airflow unter the card as well.

When i read the Manual of the X99 Board it says that for
Dual GPU Setup Slots 7 and 3 must be pupulated.
For Triple 7,5,3
For Quad 7,5,3,1

These Slots then will all Work in full x16.

First i had the two Cards stick in 7 and 3 (Dual GPU like MOBO Manual says)
My Score in Octane Benchmark with Temperature Limit of 85°C on both cards set by NVIDIA Inspector was 215.

I Tried to put the sevcond card from the PCIe Slot 3 to 4 ant tried another Benchmark with the same settings.
Score is the same! NVIDIA Inspector also shows both cards as 3.0 @ 3.0 x16!
I was scrared the card that i changed from Slot 3 to 4 would no longer be x16 but only x8 and i was wondering
what this would result in benchmarking.

So i am very happy now, that it seems i can have my Tripe GPU setup in another way that my MOBO Manual suggests
and keep the 1 PCIe Slot free between all cards to cool the Properly.

Should this have been clear to me from the beginning? I had to test it. Great Experiment..;)

Thanks for sharing =) I know the manual is not full.. but basically thsi board allows up to 7GPUs to be connected & it should detect cards automaticaly. Either Your GPUs are on x8 or on x 16 You will not notice too much of a difference in loading time & rendering will be completelly the same. Cool to have extra space in between! =) by the way Great build! Helped to setup a piece with 3x Poseidons in very simmilar configuration!

hey glimpse,

yes, build is nice- 32gigs 3200 DDR 4 RAM and
Samsung 950 pro 512 Gigs m.2 SSD for System and Programs.
Its fast. Windows boot in under 10 Seconds.

One Problem however..
The Octane Plugin in Cinema always crashed on Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit.
I had one nightshift with Aoktar and he believed it must be
a hardware issu because i am one under 10.000 having that problem.
I installed Windows 10 just for testing if
its really aboud hardware problems.
But.. It was not. So i am lucky my hardware is ok but i am
kicked ass for having win 10 right now.. :)

Hi eyelovemotion,
I have the Asrock x99 ws-e too but with the i7 5820K
I have a quadro 5000 for display and an Asus gtx 980ti for render.
The gtx works really great (133,95 score in the Octane Bench), the only issue in my system is the transfer speed from the motherboard to the graphic card (Nvidia Control Panel says that my card runs at x16, but in real it runs at x8)....I tested it by taking the time needed to load the scene

Could you make some test with the scene attached, here a link to the thread where there are some benchmarks http://www.octane.it/forum/viewtopic.ph ... rt=20#p215

My card needs 1'25'' to load the scene while the one of my friends take 54''...quite a huge difference, isn't it?.
I have noticed (because I asked a lot and till now no solution founded) that many motherboard (Asus, Gygabyte, MSI and other) have the same probelm.
let me know

Thanks,
Paolo
