Has anyone tried a system like this? It seems to be much more economical than Cubix etc and cheaper than tyan etc.
We are looking at getting a new rig after find our Cubix has not been that much of a step up. ie the Host computer can only take 1 additional card, though we will talk to our supplier soon to see if theres a way around it.

this one is big, hot & noisy solution. 8 GM based GPUS (980Ti or TitanX) are going to give You around 120-130 on air.. most case has tunel cooling (air goes from one side (usually using very strong hiRPM fans) & goes out through the back). To keep GTX lien GPUs cool You need to move a lot of air..-what generates a lot of noise.
Rack mount nodes are ment for server rooms with climate control (& noise insulation). having such rack in a studio, room..under Your desks as render node is like using moder vacum cleaner &/or hair dryer =) it's not the most silent solution. But it would fit some.
Other side is price & price/performance ratio. Barebones (depending on inner components for sure) goes around 3k + some extras + GPUs (that ussually are overpriced if You but through those vendors building server hardware). Thus in case of 8TitanX You're probably looking 13 or even 14k$..what is not so little..
Any alternatives. Yeah..You can get the same performance from 7GPUs instead of 8 in smaller case + external radiator & much more silent operations. Watercooled GPU will run 40-50C instead of 80-85C. Would give You nearlly 150 rather than 120-130 in terms of Octane Bench what ends up being faster with 7 GPUs compared to 8.
You save some money on one GPU, spend some for Cooling, get better thermal & acoustics. In a small studio environment that makes much more sense & might end up being at the same price or even cheaper (depending on who builds custom system for You).
There are different solutions & neither one is better than other - all of them have their own fit, as everyOne of us have different needs.

I always prefer 2 X 4 workstations built inside a Silverstone TJ11 case, mono cpu, lot of ram, raid 0 ssd hds.
Air cooling is the best option because you can swap or replace boards in one second. In this metal case your gpus will not suffer.
You can move your workstation where you want without any problem of liquid drop.
If you first workstation will fail you 'll have the second one to complete your work.
If one gpu will fail you can remove it with one screw.
I do a lot of maintainance on my workstations.
Buy an air compressor to remove the dust every year.
Install a powerful air conditioner in your room
Install MSI Afterburner and set the fans curve manually.
Buy a Logitech 510s keyboard with lcd display and set Afterburner to display temperature, memory and fans speed on lcd.
That's all folks!

Gabriele,
Yes - aircooling has its advantages - ease of use, maintenance. My question - what core clocks, temps, and at what fan rpms (AB curve) you have your quad x in tj11?

My WC machine while doing some 3D work, not rendering, keeps all 20 fans almost at idle at 500RPM. It is completely inaudible including 2200RPMs of 2xD5 pumps (50% of max speed). When rendering at 25% OC the fans are at abut 1000RPM which is very mild sound When rendering for preview on one titan aquaero keeps all fans at 500-600 RPMs and 35C on titan. When I was building 4 Titan X on water and tested it on air I almost got crazy after one hour of its rendering on air. Maybe it's only me but I'll never put my 4 gtxs on air especially in a small room where the machine is 1m away. For a well designed waterloop it takes 5 minutes to drain the system and exchange any part. For those who never tried watercooling it may seem a convoluted task but once you are there - no way coming back to air, just like from SSD to HDD

And the cost of about 1K EUR net rewards in faster speed, no noise, lower temps, and ease of cleaning for a well designed case.

good point for all of those who just talk how "complicated" watercooling is..
Just because someOne saved on buying few extra fitings, valves & so..it doesn't mean watercooling is complicated, it was just done wrong. As like some would throw 4x Non reference STRIX GPUs with backplates into closed case with no airflow..- it's not the quad GPUs to blame, but the way You choose cards & put them together - that matters much more.

I've just purchased one from these guys
http://www.azken.com/productos/15_gpu_computing_y_hpc
With 8x GTX 1080 Nvidia Cards, 128GB RAM, and 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2667v4 3,2 GHz 25M 8Cores
4x SSD 480GB Toshiba Enterprise
1x Starup disk SSD 250GB Toshiba Enterprise
It's a pity could buy 8x TITAN X pascal, but they don't deliver more than 2, and they have issues with the availability.
Will place a video of OCTANE 3 working with this HPC (high performance computer) in about 2 weeks from now, and will see how it perform.
Also We have MO-SYS star Tracker, and we have a simple plugin for MAYA
http://www.mo-sys.com/product/startracker working in conjunction with ULTIMATTE 11/12, will se how it perform for PREVIZ PURPOSES

Wow. Share the price of a rig like that?
