Maya OBJ + Octane Standalone n00b h3LP

Hello, Apologies if this has been discuss but after hours of searching I can't seem to find an exact answer.

I'm using Octane Standalone (trying anyways) and exporting from Maya 2015. When I export and OBJ with separated parts, multiple materials and then import to Octane Standalone everything becomes 1. One part, one material.

HOW DO I FIX THIS?!

-I did read there was once a 'maya export script' for Octane but can't seem to find a download link for this?

Thanks in advance! Sorry if this is the wrong area to be posting in!
Cheers

Hi there, export the scene as Octane alembic.
obj is a very simple file format and is not capable of storing everything.
But the alembic file should do the trick.

Thanks for the response, I don't have Octane alembic as an export option in Maya. I've looked through the plugin manager in maya and don't see that as an option to 'load/autoload'. Is it something I need to download?
Thanks

I definitely do not have those export options:
-just reinstalled maya 2016
-just reinstalled octane standalone

How do I get those export options to appear? Do I need to download something else?
Thanks

Go to:
Windows
Setting Preferences
Plugin Manager

You'll see AbcExport.bundle and import

Select those to loaded and Auto load

You'll get a new Menu under your cache main menu called Alembic with export import options etc

Good luck

Thanks for the response Peter:
Importing an ABC file still converts my object to one solid object. Also doesn't keep any materials from maya (after reading up on alembic files, there seems to be scripts to get materials to come in but blah).

All I'm looking for is a way to export an object from maya and import to octane with the parts of the object still separated so I can apply multiple materials in octane....

Thanks

My recollection is that the preferences as to how the abc file is read INTO octane are set in the octane prefs.
I'm not at octane right now but check there. I know it works

If not it is in the maya abc export prefs. you'll see some materials options etc. one of those does it.

Peter you're the man!
Octane - preferences - import

-would be nice if Octane was auto set with 'edit settings before import' and then you can turn that off later.

Thanks again!

Great to hear!

Agree with you... would be a good default within Octane
