Funky shadowing or illumination on curved surfaces

I've seen this before, funky shadowing or illumination on curved surfaces (it looks like only on the curved surfaces).

Can't take credit for the scene, it isn't mine. Using Poser 2014 x64, pretty much both at their defaults. I thought I recalled a crease angle setting, but I could be wrong. I also couldn't find it in the Octane plugin nor searching here.

I would say that geometry has corrupted normals, so smoothing will not be possible. Turn smoothing OFF for the material used on that geometry.

I would go with a smoothing problem as well...
Have had the same effect, multiple times on Stonemason props and disabling smoothing always did the trick.

Interesting, I'll have to play with it more. Where I got it from, he had no issue rendering it in Vue.
