Onboard graphics separate from card based gpu?

I'm getting ready to build a new system and am looking at different configurations.

My (limited) understanding is that if you have two graphics cards, one of them can be dedicated to Octane, and the other can be dedicated to your system.
This would be an advantage to me right now, as when I render with Octane, it becomes pretty much impossible to continue working. (I currently have a single card.)

But here's a question...many of the cpu's these days support on-board graphics.
So would it be possible to have a single graphics card dedicated to Octane, but use the onboard graphics for the system?

Or would that not work?

Thanks

Yes, this works well. You may need to enable a bios setting on you motherboard to enable this.

Thanks Paul!

Am I correct in assuming that I could also have two graphics cards, and then either dedicate both to Octane, while working with the onboard graphics, or (though I'm not sure why I would need to) work with one card and dedicate the other to Octane?

I'm working with Cinema4D, but am guessing the host program wouldn't make a difference (?)

Yes, you can do that. You plug your graphics card into the card you want Windows to use as your display adapter. Or there is software you can use to do this for certain hardware configurations.
