How does gaussianspectrum work?

I'm not really familiar with how to think of light as a wave...what is gaussianspectrum? Where is it best used? I tried using it on a diffuse material's transmission channel, but it just seems to make a solid color.

Does this parameter have to do with chromatic aberration?

The Octane help file isn't too helpful on the subject.

gaussianspectrum is a colour based on defining the position and width of a gaussian distribution (eg a bell curve) in the visible spectrum...

So when applied to a translucency material, is it just a color in that context? If so, why not just pick that color with RGBspectrum? I sense that there's more to it...
