Noob alert

Okay, bought the standalone/C4D combo and am getting my feet wet.
First question...can anybody recommend any tutorials/videos that they found particularly helpful when they first got started?
I'm hammering away on a lowly 650 Ti, but before I throw any money at new graphics cards, I want to learn everything I can about getting the best speed/quality settings.
Especially interested in squeezing what I can out of DirectLighting since it's so dang fast.
Was getting some crashes earlier, but things seem better now. Is it a bad idea to try to go back and forth between multiple scene files and render, or should that not be a problem?
Also, when I create Octane materials, is it ok to use .psd files, or is something else recommended?
