Titan-X or 2 GFX-Cards

Hey guys!

I'm really sorry to repeat a question if so, but i have searched for it and didnt find the exact answer im looking for.

Im about to buy and change my system to GPU Rendering. I have a option to get a 500 € Prizeless on a GFX. So i really want to get a great GFX Card for GPU Rendering.

For colleagues and friends the best way is : buy the TITAN X for around 1k Euro. I googled a bit and found some articles that say that octane uses just one of the VRam Slots.

So quick and dirty, what would you recommend on a 1k Budget ONLY GPU? I got a i7 4930K so i guess im okay with that one :P

Thanks in advance and sorry if i repeated the question.

let's try to help You a bit here. now the question whether You need so much of ram?

980Ti & TitanX are almost the same in terms of speed, the biggest difference is amount of vRAM. So TitanX gives You 12GB, while 980Ti 6GB.

because of out-of-core-texture functionality implemented lately You are able to drop some textures to RAM. so technically, 12GB will help You when You have tons of meshes (even if current version is limited to 19mln. triangles), or You need enormous resolutions (the bigger the resolution, more vram You need to reserve in card)

there is this tool, called OctaneBench that You can find under Resources section in menu - this will tell You the speed of cards, but You need to think logically how much of let's say vRam You might need, what are Your future upgrade plans (maybe You do not wish to upgrade & would like to keep You card for 3-4 Years - this way it's logical to grab TitanX..)

it's hard to say exactly, if one card fits Your needs or not, as we do not know Your exact needs, plans, etc. Looks through forums, let's say trough gallery, try to understand what is possible with certain amount of vRam & if You're new..I'd say simply start with something simple & progress as You go, but..if You are serious & trying to get the most of this - get the best part You can afford ('cos sometimes making optimisations means doing those in the worst time possible - just before delivering the project as it's in the most complex stage - it's a lot of things to do then & You need to worry about making things happen at all..- so at least in my eyes, paying extra for more vRam do pay of)

another thing to remember - it's advised to have separate card for screens & UI (another one purely for rendering) just to have the most fluid & response system. However You can technically work with single card if You wish.

Plus, remember there are cards like 780 6GB (only in used marked as those got discontinued), that offer good speed for quite low price (~350$), but it's getting harder & harder to get them..

Hi

That's very interesting Glimpse , I'm a Lightwave user thinking of buying Octane and hadn't considered the final render size. I've got a dual Xeon machine with 64gb ram and Quadro K4000 and thinking I would add in 1+ TitanX. So I would use the Quadro for working and Titan/s for rendering.

Sometimes I need to render scenes at 16000 x 10000 ps , do you think the Titan would cope?

Yeh, if these resolution are in Your target zone, simply get TitanX, otherwise You might find having issues with vRAM =)mentioned resolution would need few gigs of vRAM on it's own (You can always split it, but it's additional hassle).
