Demo Lightwave 2015 and Octane crash ipr

Hi,

fiddling around with the two demos and have sudden and complete Lightwave and Octane crashes when rendering some old scenes with Octane. Doing a simple F9 rendering with pure Lightwave is no problem. The Testscenes render without problems.

I have instant crashes when I merely touch my 3DConnexion mouse in Lightwave, too, but I read that this is a demo thing. Some users didn't have the crashes once they activated Lightwave. IMHO this is weird as this is not a special demo version but the full version without full license.

So I'm mot sure what the reason for the crashes of Octane are. Is it Lightwave? Octane? Some Mesh-Problems that disturb Octane for LW? (Importing the same file into Rhino doesn't crash and renders fine without doing anything.)

What are the most known reasons for having Octane for Lightwave crash?

Cheers
Philipp

You could get a crash if you are using non Octane materials in the materials node editor, but usually the plugin should work without any crash. Also same non standard ASCII international characters can cause problems if used in the materials names. If you want to send me any of your scenes that are crashing, I could test them here.

I don't have reports about problems from users working with the 3DConnexion mouse. I don't think that it could be a demo issue. When do you get the crash, in the IPR?

Hi Juanjo,

yes indeed, it was the Umlaute in the mesh names which caused the crashes. I modeled this project in Rhino and rendered it in Cinema4D, some many many years ago. Cinema4D is a german product, so no problems with Umlaute (which normally never use).

About the 3DConnexion mouse crash, I found this on the Newtek Forums: http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php ... iate-crash

So I hope this problem will be gone once I buy LW. But I don't understand how this could happen, only because it's a Demo ...

Ahh, yes. This could be a problem of the LightWave 2015 demo, not related to the Octane plugin.

I can confirm that with 'full' LW 2015.2, both Octane and 3DConnexion are working fine, I have SpacePilot Pro :)

This is great news Antti, thanks for the info. I use it with Rhino/Blender/Unity and kind off miss it in LW.

BTW, my last Lightwave was 8.5 and dates from 2004 :) so I have some getting used to.

Now what is missing is the LiveDB, but I'm sure it will come. I have much trust in Juanjo. :D

Yes 3DConnexion is must in any software, luckily very many support it :)
LW 8.5 to 2015.2 WOW yes you will have a LOT of new things to see but in my opinion (used LW since 5.0) it is getting better and better in every update by a milestone and I have never needed to go back in updates, they always work fine. Of course there will be improvements and minor bug fixes but I mean for normal use it just works :)

And LW2015(.2?) has greatly improved 3DConnexion settings, now you can really control how it works, for example you can lock the bank angle so that you don't accidentally turn camera in funny way :)

Just note that while LW has full support for controlling the 3D control (rotate, pan zoom), it does not have any button support natively. So to get your own button configurations done, you need to make your own custom profile and that feature has been removed from the latest 3DConnexion drivers :(
But I am happily using 3DxWare 10.0.16 and with it you have total control to any buttons :)
You can try to edit the XML files in new drivers but for me it was easier to use the older driver and it is working 100%, no problems so don't worry. And you cannot get the 10.0.16 anymore from 3DConnexion but I can give it to you if you need, I have the original installer in safe place :)

I think we should continue this discussion in PM as this is offtopic in here :)

Yep, totally OT, but useful for other new LW users :) I went PM now.
