Hello,

Has anyone tried to install Octane Render on SBS2007?

We have a hi-spec server in our office running 24/7 and it would be great if we could use this machine with a GTX 580.
Ideally this machine could be reached via Remote Desktop from any notebook whist we are on site discussing design changes with our clients.

Now, Due to the way Octane works, I've yet to even try this. but if it does work, it'll be slow as a slideshow with the default RDP settings.

It could be possible to do over the Local Network, but when running video over Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) over the internet with anything above 100ms latency. You'll quickly note that the overhead of the screen redrawing makes the interface quite unresponsive with anything less than a 10Mbps connection. It is possible to apply the data compression and color reduction options at the cost of image quality.

I find Citrix's ICA has a much faster response / redraw for video over lower bandwidth conections.

Running a card in an always on server is really going to boost your power bill, also the GTX cards aren’t designed to last as long as server components, the MTBF hours for Desktop hardware vs. Server Hardware has a big difference.

Windows XP Pro, or newer windows professional versions all have support for single user Remote Desktop, You should be able to use that as a test before dedicating your server to run that role.

Octane does'nt need much resources other than a GPU, so running it on a hi-spec server does'nt give you any benefit.
Any desktop PC should suffice.
