Must Be Doing Something Wrong...

Ok, we just recently got the Stand Along version of Octane.
We use a variety of applications across our company and so we figured this was the best option. Most of our work starts in AutoCAD, but we also use 3DS MAX Sketch-up and a few other 3d applications.
When I have a project in CAD, we usually take it into MAX and then do renderings there. Now we're trying to then use MAX to created the OBJ that is then used by Octane.
My trouble is, when I bring my file into Octane, parts from different layers in CAD are clumped together in Octane, so when I assign a material, more items change than what I want.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I even took the time to assign materials in MAX hoping that would help, but the same issue occurred.
Any advice out there for someone new to Octane to make sure the different pieces I want a particular materials to be assigned to actually comes across into Octane?
