vRam/Ram Ratio

Hi,
I am looking for a low budget GPU that will be running on a eGPU setup from my laptop. My laptop however is a few years old and only has 6gb of RAM.
Am I right to think that with that amount of RAM there is no point for me to get a 4GB card?
Somewhere in the forums I read that you need 3 or 4 times the amount of RAM to take advantage of the VRAM.
Currently in between 770 2gb, and 770 4gb which are on offer in the UK and selling fairly cheaply (£150, £200).
Would be happily consider any other alternative on that price range. For example am I better of with a 960?
I will be mainly just testing the engine, and playing around on the standalone..
