Render the Metaverse - tomGlimps' WIP

As far as I understand we don't need to have WIP thread to enter the
“Render the Metaverse” competition,
but it will be usefull for me - just to make a commitment & get some proper feadback!
(especially considering the fact I don't know too much 'bout VR yet =)
So, my entry will be based on
Sculptural Architecture (moodboard)
don't have a particular outcome in mind just yet, but I'll figure out as I go =)

Really looking forward to seeing what you make. I'll also be making something for this. I think i'll start a WIP as well. Good luck!

Dotcommer, Good Luck! =)..
Latelly been spining this "Render the Metaverse" in my head for a while. Already took
direction with shapes & some thoughts 'bout scene arangement came along watching talks 'bout VR as a media (it's limitations, where it shines etc. - so much to learn).
Loosely started blocking some 3D shapes (for the scale in preLighting stage) like this
L5 Bench by
Marie Khouri (not sure if I'm going to use it so it's kind of sketchy for now).
One thing I know for sure - final scene will be short of colors.. - white/grey with some subtle textures (mainly to pick lighting well). Something like
Outpost 23 from Unreal Tournament is a great piece of inspiration.
As I've started to talk 'bout lighting, light will be taken from HDRi environments (
geared for this contest lately) to keep render times managable & get that cozy effect (as You see, all of choosen skies are from early morning or late eve).

Rather than doing what I choose - in this case making props for this entry, I've turned & found an excuse to pick up one program I've dream of touching for a long time - Grasshopper (not exactly the program, more like an addon/plugin for Rhino) - short after I was watching tons of simple tuts 'bout it, luckily still trying not to get distracted too much, keeping already set direction for this contest.
Screenshot bellow is from some tests I've done. Octane Rendered preview piece was lit by one of HDRis mentioned before. Grasshopper script/tree needs some tweaks in order to be reused (wrapping different surface), but overall I love this way of modeling - that interactivity is something I can get used to =) the only thing is the amount of time required to dig into this at first..

Great light (above in your concept shape study)
And great texturing and idea on this one... Kinda conjuring up concepts like maze, puzzle, trap, tunnel, matrix, etc...

That is a really cool form Tom, love where it's going, hopefully you'll continue to develop it.
And glad to see your experimenting with Rhino/Grasshopper. Grasshopper is awesome.
A less complex set of tools you can also use for more architectural types of panel structures with Rhino are the Paneling Tools. No where near the capability of the Grasshopper plugin, but for simple jobs comprised of paneling type structures, the Panel Plugin saves a TON of time. For example, if you wanted to build a skyscraper, maybe fluid in form, but composed of window grids or something like that, the paneling tools will do it in a snap.

Yeah, same here. You'd think we'd be able to make more time to devote to something possibly worth 10k! hahaha
