Copy objects with mix material to new project

When I do this, the Material 1 and Material 2 slots in the Mix Material are empty. I have to relink the materials manually. Is this the way it is supposed to be?

same thing happens with vray. Create a null below the object and put your 2 mixing mat tags on it, then when you copy the object all three mats will transfer
