Object visibility set to 0 should remove its influence

If I transition the visibility channel on an object from 1 to 0, it doesn't completely eliminate the object's influence from the scene.
I am doing this to reveal something inside, but the internal component remains dimmer than if I hide the exterior shell object.
Also, if there are any intersections between the "invisible" object and what remains, then the result is messed up, with dark streaks on the visible object where they intersect. I know, I know, I really should avoid such things, but that can be tricky if there are a bunch of components involved. I can live wth this, but it would be good to have an object with zero visibility really invisible in terms of its influence on the scene.
Thank you.
