HELP! ... Warning: Render has failed

(I accidentally posted this in the standalone forum. Trying again here.)

===

I'm working on a scene with lots of proxied vegetation. I've hit the point where adding one plant causes the Octane preview to fail. It sounds like I've maxed out the graphics cards's RAM, but I don't see any indication of that.

At the top of the viewport it says: Mem: 2.670/5.572 GB. I'm running two GTX GeForce GTX 780 cards.

The MAX file is 185MB. Total of all maps and proxies is about 1.25GB.

===

I was running v2.15 before. I've since upgraded to 2.21.1, but no joy. I ticked the "Use CPU memory" box, and increased the limit to 16 - still no luck. When it fails in this version and with those settings the viewport stats said 0 GPU use, and something like 9.5/16.0 GB of CPU.

Why is it crashing?

Is there a workaround?

I'm almost done with this job, and this has me shut down. Any help is appreciated!!!

Hi, make sure you enabled "movable proxy" on all of the proxy sources, and disabled SLI in nvidia control panel.

Good question. I think so, but I'll check. Does that make a difference with memory usage?

Also, I can't find SLI setting in my NVIDIA control panel.

Side topic: Is it possible to get Octane to recognize proxies that are instanced via a Substitute modifier? I'd rather not place a pile of bushes again, but right now it renders the placeholder mess of planes.

I know nothing about this modifier, maybe you should place a feature request or bug report for Karba about it.

Displacement is another cause of this error. Make sure you have it all turned off during your test.

Octane needs to have an override, the request has been made a few times, but unfortunately hasnt been implemented.

FYI, a couple of recent plants I made were not movable proxies. That was the problem. Thanks for the help!

Also, I couldn't get the substitute modifier to work (which is a bummer!), but got around it with a plugin.
