Has anyone done this? I know you need an expander of some sort because the power supply in the case is insufficient. For anyone out there who has done this, I love to know how successful you've been, and how much louder your workspace is now because of the extra unit (I'v very sensitive to sound). What expander to do recommend?

One thing to be careful of with using GPU expander boxes with the Mac Pro is that OS X Yosemite now only recognizes 3 GPUs. Total.

Great tip. I'm currently on Mavericks though. Can I recognize more than 3 GPU's?

get a pair of very powerful GPUs & external power supply..-that's probably the best deal for that box & gives least amount of problems..as mentioned by Riggles, more than 3 & You face some problems, so getting anything externally will put You on the edge.

There are a lot of different expansion routes if You choose to play, from splitters to expansion boxes or open type clusters..but You have to keep in mind things mentioned & pluss make a choice based on Your needs..(more expansive options, capable housing 4x dual or pair of tripple slot dual GPU cards, with power unit included will set You somewhere between 1-2k$ depending on where You live; while cheaper options will cost You 100-500$ + PSU, but You'll get slower connection too =).

Yosemite recognizes 4 I thinkI have two Z's running and it sees all four.
That is the later trash bin model though... I'm not sure if i is different for the silver ones.
