Small-ish feature request, sort of

I often end up forgetting to flag the Alpha channel in the kernel node, which annoys me to no end. So, unless someone has a reason to prefer otherwise, I wonder if we could have the alpha ON by default?

Why don't you set up Octane (Open Editor) like you want and then make that default (Save as Default)?
It saves everything you have in the Open Editor view so you can make env. maps etc. ready, not necessarily connected but ready to use.
That's the way I did and now I get all settings nice and ready when I start new project
Or of course if you need different setups, you can save as many presets as you like

I also use the alpha channel, but a little less than half the time, so I would prefer it off by default.

Exactly, there are many different needs so presets and default is great for that
