:: EDIT ::
This issue has been solved, and i've uploaded the project files for the finished lantern! Check page two for the download.

Looking for a good way to achieve this effect in the image linked:
I want to try and get those large fibrous pieces that catch the light shining through it as well as nice soft shadows of things behind the paper. Any suggestions on a good workflow to set this up?

A very thin cube for the paper, a specular material without reflexion, index 1, large roughness, noise and/or texture in transmission, a bump. Just an idea, i'm not sure it will work in all cases...
Here a very quick test

Its a good place to start! Thanks for the suggestion.

A faster approach would be a plane (no thickness) with a diffuse material and a white colour in the transmission channel.

Ok! I've got a test render up. Take a look:
There are some issues with it but I'm pretty happy with how its coming out so far. One question I have though is how do I minimize that yellow halo around the edges? I can't seem to figure out how to minimize that. Also some tearing in the polys, but thats probably from my displacement effector with noise.
The scene is built up using tomabobu's technique using a diffused texture with the paper texture in the transmission channel and some bump/displacement. The light source is a small sphere with a blackbody emission.

Update render. Much better! Would love feedback on it if anyone cares to.

Looks really really good. I would scale down the size of the paper texture as it's giving the impression that the whole object is smaller.

Ok, another update.
Its looking even better. But now I've realized I have a new problem. If I look underneath at the hole in the lantern, I have this insanely bright core and I'm not sure how I can minimize this while still retaining the nice diffused look on the surface.

Any ideas how to reduce that hotspot from the light source without dimming the actual light? I'm stuck here. I feel like I saw something a while ago that talked about increasing the effect of a light, but not its visible appearance...

You could try to uncheck the "Camera Visibility" in the octane light parameters. I like the render,you could try adding more imperfections on the surface though! Good job mate.
