Someone knows if exists something like Akitio thunderbolt expander that could contain one Titan Black with proper PSU and is safe and easy to carry on and use with a windows laptop (with thunderbolt or other fast connection)?
Thank you very much.

I'am also interested into external gpu expansion, please Otoy let us know if it's possible to do it or at least if you plan to add an extra feature in release 3. THX in advance!

It is definitely possible to do thunderbolt expansion with a titan and a 850 W PSU.... build a little rig using Atiko and make it small enough to carry on.

You'll just have to make sure it is cooled enough with some strong fans if you are going to enclose it in something small enough for a back pack.

It will not be light with a titan, a 850 W PSU and an enclosure. But it works. Here is my Z

This is for a Mac though.

The main thing I would check is to make sure that thunderbolt on a PC has the band-width and sees the GPU etc. I do not see why it would not... but thundrbolt is not a common thing for PC's yet I am guessing.

Good luck

You could get away with a 400w PSU as well. My single Titan Akitio setup maxes out at 250w measured with a Kill-a-watt meter.

Not aesthetically pleasing, but should work like a champ. ;) Wonder how long this mutha would hold a bloke up at a TSA checkpoint at the airport?....

I got hassled once more for the PSU than anything else. Heavy.... lots of cables going to a mini MOB. He thought it was remote controlled. Took me a while to explain.

"No aesthetically pleasing" is extremely polite.

This was a test system that worked so handy that I kept putting off making it better.... on of these days mate.

450 W would be great... this one is a 1500W cause I have another that I run that I am going to migrate over and have tow of them.

hi, Peter. Just a though. Your fans are not helping by blowing to the card,
they would have to suck air to help the card.. =)
just an idea..'bout simple physics.

sometimes that takes time, but I never had any issues. I do have to lug GPU, PSU & pair of TB drives in my hand luggage..- have to be shown every time, but they are technically simple electronic devices. Though having good brand & maybe some information about the product might help if You have to explain something about them.

all the boxes that would allow You to use TitanBlack without any additional supply are quite a bit bigger. As typically they are designed for lower power usage cards - so if You need 300-400W PSU the unit will have 3-4 expansion slots be bit bigger that You would want =)

the solution would be to get modular SFX power supply that is way smaller & has ability to not use certain cords You don't need =) there's also smaller devices (pcb only, that don't have any shell) You can buy quite cheap to plug Your GPU, but in order to use that via Thunderbolt You need an thunderbolt to Express card adapter =) keep in mind that this solution cuts some speed too..

Hi Peter,

may i ask you what kind of backplate that is?
I can only find these ExpressCard thingies in the net.
I'm trying to find a setup to use an external GPU on my iMac so i'm forced to find something that works via thunderbolt like in your setup.
I would love to get more informations about it, the only thing i found was a setup where somebody had one of these ExpressCard things and
connected it via an adapter to thunderbolt. But for me it felt like slower performance and too complicated.

Looking forward to hear from you,
Jonas

I wasn't being literal G... only suggesting that to the totally clueless, this would likely look very much like some kind of bomb. ;)
