Displacement cracks or holes at geometry edges

Erm, anyone know how to stop this occurring?
My main aim, for only about 5 years now, is to use displacement to make realistic, modern brick walls. I can close up the gaps by adding a smooth modifier of over 90degrees to the geometry but that makes the corners look wrong and rounded. It also puts weird shading on various parts of the wall. I guess this is due to the over 90 degree smooth modifier but there's no other way to close the cracks.
I tried using the displacemnt shift to close the gap but that causes the mortar to then overlap and look wrong...
Is it actually possible to use displacement here without ripping the geometry open and making these cracks?
