Reducing Noise / Optimal Settings for Scene?

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to determine what the best render settings are for a scene I'm working on. It was rendering very quickly (1-2 minutes) in the DirectLighting kernel, but once I turned the diffuse depth from 2 to 6 to get more light to bounce around the scene, the render time and amount of noise went up drastically.
Is there a smarter way to configure the settings to get the most out of it? I really appreciate the help and guidance!
