Riser cards problem, help needed!

Hi everyone!
It's my 1st post so, as youcan understand i'm not very enlightened about octane...hope you can help me!
My concern is about Octane's bandwith needs for working... this is because i'm trying to build a rig before buying octane and at this moment i'm testing a couple hardware related scenarios based on available budget....
The problem is i'm having some trouble with 2 cards on my rig... got 1 gtx 590 and 1 gtx 580 properly working using flat ribbon riser pcie x16 to x16 cables.... but can't put the other 2 gtx 580 working... they are stuck at some miserable 0.35 M/sec... these ones are connected via pcie 1x to 16x usb 3.0 risers.... those like bitcoin guys use... a
Any guess on this stuff!?
The system is:Asus P6T6 WS REVOLUTION / 16Gb / Core i7 920 / Win7 x64
Cards are correctly installed under windows environment, no buggy driver issues, neither power issues (2x 2000w 160 amp's psu's + 750w psu for motherboard ang ssd's), also the motherboard has enough pcie bandwith as far as i know...
Can someone give a little help!!
Best regards,
Pedro

Hi, Pedro!
You have a very capable motherboard =) don't ruin the situation using some cheap 1x to 16x raisers =) get proper (16 to 16 shielded ribon cables) plug all those cards into four 16 lane slots & enjoy the performance! Don't save money on buying cheap cables (unless You motherboard have only multiple 1x) if You have a possibility to hook on high speed x16 =)

Thanks for the reply!
The pcie 1x/16x was just a matter of more airflow and extra lenght available...
actually i've changed the rig to a rack cabinet for properly store the 2000w server psu's...
but the cables lack performance somehow.... dunno why but it's real.... only 10% of the cards capabilites are working with 1x plugged... still waiting for a bunch of full 16x to arrive...
Tough someone has the same issues... and might help... some theory on how octane deals with i/o trough pcie lanes would be helpfull to see how many cards i can plug on that 6pcie x16 available....

Pedro,
The 1x-16x risers should not influence render performance at all, just load time as you probably know. And even load time delay is relatively minimal. Are you using the USB 3 type cables with external power via SATA/molex? What's the cable type/spec?

Hi seeker,
The cables are this...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171548695212? ... EBIDX%3AIT
and as i could get 5 chips correctly recognized by windows... but under octane (and thea....by the way)... just 2 were working properly.... the gtx590 and one gtx580, the other 2 gtx580... were only crunching 0.3 M/sec....
Just for info on the rig....
Mobo psu is a 750w from NOx with 4 12v rails powering about 18 amps each...
Graphic card are being powered from a 2000w 160 amps 80+Platinum externel psu's connected with dual psu cable... so it shouldn't be a power issue... in my opinion...
Almost getting insane.... setting this up!

That riser type is fine. If there was an issue with the risers it is unlikely that your system would have recognised the cards in the first place. However, it is still possible that there could be secondary issues.
Have you done much trouble shooting? The obvious thing is to swap out the cards to narrow the issue. Have you put those 2 580's directly in the blue slots?
Are any of these cards powering your monitor(s)?

Hi again,
Every card is working fine when connected directly to the motherboard....
Swaped cards... problem persists....
only gtx 590 is powering my monitors (2)...
Atm i'm getting even more trouble... since cardd swapping... only gtx 590 and one 580 are fine... other 580 plugged gets code 43 under device manager...
Loosing my mind!

So the risers work fine on the other cards? Sounds like that might be hardware failure on those two 580's. But it could be driver related. If you have not done this yet, perhaps reinstall your graphics driver as a first step with all cards plugged (& powered).

Thx,
Gonna try to plug them all and reinstall drivers tomorow... let's see what happens!
