Octane becomes rental or subscription based per year that will make it not work after subscription expires. What do you guys think?
Autodesk owns otoy so this isn't far fetched.

AFAIK Autodesk has a PARTNERSHIP with OTOY, they don't own it.

That's good to know. With software becoming more and more rental based sooner or later we will be paying rent for everything.

I agree only if the development will grow
Adobe CC is an example.

Well I added a poll.
It would be interesting what people think in two years if octane does go cloud only and rental.

About these rentals, seems to me that the proletariat doesn´t own the means of production anymore.

Joke.

I understand this kind of evolution. Thanks to illegal filesharing, I suppose. If however these companies will demand royalties at some point from the work made with their tools, that will be something else, if the company who owns the tools doesn´t participate in selling and marketing in any way whatsoever. If they do provide marketing place and promotion, then royalties would be reasonable. UE4 demands these royalties at the moment, regardless where and how the final product is sold, but, given the cheap price for their class of art tools, I have nothing to say about it really. But, nevertheless, all the cgi-artist should be on their toes all the time with this progress and be vocal when things start to go south for them. I have had a career in music biz as a recording artist and I really don´t wanna end up being the cattle again who gets nothing and everyone else gets the juice.

But why would renting software help vs. pirating?
Adobe CC is as easily available as all other previous versions.

I don't want to invest in more gpus(especially highend gpus) if it turns out that octane will be rental next year. Its one reason I'm cautious buying gpus because I know otoy and AD are very close. Just look at lagoa.

Steady and predictable income from those who pay. And in, say, five years with annual fees, you are adding up quite abit compared to single pay.
