Octane plugin for Maya Slow

Hi. I want to know why the Plug-in version of Octane Render is slow, there is a progress bar that I must wait for, compared to the standalone version which renders fast, the plug-in for Maya just to render a cube is slow ?

Hi,

The maya plugin and the standalone use exactly the same rendering engine so it should be the same speed for the exact same scene. (baring any small changes due to different minor version numbers eg: 2.0 vs 2.1)

Things to check would be:
1) Are the scenes as identical as you can make them, including kernel settings, render resolution etc.
2) Check the megasamples per second rather than any progress bars speed as the renders may have a different total samples per pixel they are rendering too.
3) Check both are using the same GPU's if you have more than one.

I increased the Refresh Time, there is a improvement in speed but unlike the standalone version, the maya plugin doesn't render on the fly ? Also does Octane suppose OpenSubDiv because the object is rendering as strictly a polygonal object ? And even after applying a Octane Material, Octane is informing me I have a MentalRay Lambert shader applied to my object, which I don't.

I don't think Octane Support believes me. I decided to show a screen shot.

No OpenSubDiv Support, and the render times with a CUDA card toggled on, are horrible !

Is it because I'm using the Demo version, I have to endure all this crude gray renders that look worse then PovRay, no disrespects to PovRay ? Compared to the standalone the Maya plug-in is a disgrace, unless that is because I'm using the demo version and oToy wants $650 of my poor Canadian money

Hi, You will need to setup octane materials inside maya for your objects (it's not because of demo limitations). Otherwise they will be assigned a default material.
Can you please post a direct comparison of what you are seeing in the standalone that you expect from the maya plugin?
Maybe we can help you get what you expect from the maya plugin.

Have you seen the plugin manual here: http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Maya/

There is no start/reload render button on my octane render toolshelf ?

I apply a OctaneDiffuse material though hypershade, when I do render though Octane, I get the error;
// Warning: Octane: Material "lambert1" is not Octane material, changing to "Gray"... // ?

When adding a Octane Light Node as I assume Maya lights don't work in Maya, Maya crashes ?

You will need to actually assign the octane material to your object. The easiest way is to select an object and use the "Assign new diffuse material to selection" OctaneRender toolbar button.

Does adding the octane light always crash Maya or is it random.
I'm trying to reproduce your problem and so far cannot. Have you tried disabling other plugins as a test?
Which version of maya are you using? 2015?

I have done this as well, same error ?

Adding an Octane Light always crashes Maya 2015 SP5. Which plugins do you suppose I disable, everything ? I disabled a few, the result crashed Maya.

Crashes or hangs?
As there is a known issue - the SP5 of Maya brought some changes to the SDK, so the current version of plugin (linked against previous SDK) may hang in Viewport 2.0 mode if there is Octane Sun or Octane Light present. It will be fixed in next versions, but so far - if you have SP5 installed, the quick workaround is switch to native viewport.

It hangs. Changing to the legacy viewport fixes the issue, I am now able to add Octane Lights without Maya hanging.

Why does my cylinder not render like a typical cylinder should render, with gloss, spec etc ?
