Proper workflow for "unbiased" IES?

Can anyone shed some light on proper practices in using IES?

Where should the texture go exactly to produce realistic results? Should the IES be plugged only in the distribution? What's the proper gamma for an IES texture?
The trick is to achieve results as close to reality as possible. Anyone can tweak stuff manually, but I guess that there are "real" numbers, Octane being unbiased and all..

Plug the IES file into the distribution with a Grayscale Image node. Set the gamma to 1.0. Use a Spherical projection, and if you set the Coordinate Space to Normal, the light will travel in the direction of the emitter polygon normal. Octane 2.15 allows ticking Surface Brightness, which I think will calibrate the Power to 1 W/srm2.
