Octane Materials. Questions thread.

Hi,
I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread discussing Octane materials, with a view to helping Carrara people translate from Carrara's own shaders, or even just improve our knowledge of creating materials. Plus how they interact with the other render settings.
Here for example I was stuck for a while on why in the mirror the sink is much darker lower down. It turned out to be my Glossy Depth setting was too low. I upped it to 5 to get the 2nd image.
I still have a lot to learn on Octane Materials btw, but I did cut my teeth on them a while back with DAZ->OCTANE. This is a WIP of the interior of the "DynoFlush 3000 Portable Toilet Cubicle System" - bringing the Toilets of tomorrow to your business - TODAY.

As a follow up could someone suggest a solution to this please?
I am quite happy with my booth lighting and materials now. However I'm not sure how to get this level of Power/efficiency/distribution and NOT have the light completely bright.
To me it should be a dingy space in which to spend time. That's part of the comedy of this advert, but if that was so you'd see more of the texture of the light.
How to do this please?
Thanks

Hmmm..
Maybe a little Bloom\glare or add a couple of small lights on the door (the small round spot type) ?
I would not go as far as to make it look like an actresses makeup/dressing table (as I have done!) but I think you get the idea? something a little more understated maybe?
Sorry its so 'rough n ready' low samples but off to eat with the wife n kids..
Final thought(s), maybe just a tube light at the top and one at the bottom (with a little distribution held back!) of the inside of the door or around the bottom of the walls? Thinking around the subtle but effective

Pic no 2. I saw the Ennis house HDRI sneaking in there! he he.
The bloom is a good idea or at least some "glow" around the light. I'm quite happy with the dingy look, the actress lights would look great on a different kind of booth. Might use that idea for another booth that appears in the film. Thanks.
What I'm wondering is that can you take the brightness of the white light (the emitter source) down, to show a texture file in the light, but keep it's reach over the booth the same?

When using mirrors adjust the diffuse depth and use path tracing or PMC. You will get clearer reflection and brighter image.

Tugs. Thanks.
I'd love to but for animations on my rig, PMC/path tracing is out of the question. Maybe next year with some more cash I'll upgrade the rig. Or perhaps the cloud will become practical for those of us in England.

Like a texture emission instead of blackbody emitter you mean?..

I just love the lighting it provides

Little hint, which im sure you are aware of. If you have 2 video cards do not attach a monitor to the second card if you want the most memory for rendering. If your main card allows you can attach 2 monitors to that card. you will be able to set the priority on the second card to Medium or higher.

- Carrara render priority

The attachment RenderPriority.JPG is no longer available
Thanks Tug
So, being new to my 3card setup..
How do I know which card my monitor is connected to if all the cards are the same model?
I just assumed the 1st card in the list would be my display card (PCIE 16) the middle one would be my PCIE 8) and so on.. Am I wrong?
How would you have optimal settings for my cards? Cheers for bringing this up as it has been playing on my mind!
My understanding of a PM from Sighman a while back, I want the display card unchecked and on low priority or the other two cards checked only on either med or high! Have I misunderstood Sighmans PM?

Yes that appears correct, where is your second monitor connected. both monitors should be connected to the main display.
Try this in the plugin. Deactivate all the cards and then change the view in you scene it should not update
select the 1st one which should be your main notice the amount of free ram
move around and you may find it a bit sluggish, well actually not cause you have 3GB ram
Try each card separately then the 2 unmonitored cards together
then you can add the 3rd if you like.
