Visible/volumetric lights

How do I fake them? I've tried using a blackbody emission texture, but I still have to turn up the bloom or glare and with other white things in the scene, it blows the whole scene out. So who has achieved it, and how? I apologize if this has been addressed, I searched for a topic, but only came up with people asking for it to be implemented.
