Visible/volumetric lights

How do I fake them? I've tried using a blackbody emission texture, but I still have to turn up the bloom or glare and with other white things in the scene, it blows the whole scene out. So who has achieved it, and how? I apologize if this has been addressed, I searched for a topic, but only came up with people asking for it to be implemented.

do some search for volumetrics or scattering. Also check demo scenes, there is some fog scenes. it will give some idea about volumetrics.
