Render View issue

Hi Jim,

I'm having a few issues when I switch from tiff8 to tiff16 in the render settings.

When the settings are set to 8bit maya's preview render show this:

(this is a screen grab of maya's render view)

When I flip to tiff16, the render preview flips to this:

(this is a screen grab of maya's render view)

Also, there's an issue when you render both the 8 and 16 bit (.exr). Both are dark.
I've added a 2.2 gamma in photoshop which brings the images back a bit, but is this the best way to work?

cheers,

Steve

It's the same issue with Maya IFF and Maya16 IFF.

The preview window flips to a darker look.

Is this the same for everyone else?

cheers,

Steve.

Ah cool, so it's not just me.

How are you working around this?

Guys, do you ever use "Tonemapped HDR" checkbox in Octane settings?..;)

Hi Jim,

won't that clamp all of the overbrights (so we won't be able to pull these back in)?

cheers,

Steve

The thing is:
When you render in IPR - you are always rendering non-HDR 8-bit image.
But as soon as you start the final rendering (one frame or batch render) and set the output file to HDR format - your "Tonemapped HDR" setting takes effect. So, in this case, the same as in Standalone: either you get tonemapped or untonemapped file.

Ah, I didn't know that about rendering in the IPR, cheers.

There was an issue in Standalone, where the .exr file rendered out darker (both tonemapped and untonemapped), but this has been fixed. I think it was something to do with the linking of the white balance to the gamma.

Maybe it's me, but I can't remember having this darkening issue in the previous maya plugins.

What workflow would you suggest in order to render the untonemapped image, and still have an image which looks roughly like the IPR (oh, I put the gamma to 2.2 in the IPR, if this changes anything).

cheers.

Here's the link to the standalone issue (which is now fixed):
