Ivy generator - missing alpha channel

hi
I guess this is a noob question, but I hope it's ok.
I'm trying to add some ivys to my scene. For this I use ivy generator (http://graphics.uni-konstanz.de/~luft/ivy_generator/) and export as .obj.
The .obj file is then used as proxy in Sketchup. The geometri works fine, but the leaves are missing their alpha channel.
I can import the .obj into the standalone version, fix the material, and then save as .obj - but is there a 'smarter' way of doing it? so I don't need to use the standalone version? eg. but edit the .mtl file?
Thanks
